How to Crop/Resize an Image Online
If you don’t have access to Adobe Photoshop or similar photo editing software, you can use a free online photo editor called Pixlr. The following is a guide on how to use the cropping and re-sizing functions in Pixlr. You may find similar functions in other free or paid photo editing tools, but the screenshots and instructions below pertain specifically to Pixlr.
Let’s say you want to upload an image to the website with the dimensions 460 x 337 pixels. If the image you have been provided with is smaller than this, you cannot use it because it will appear blurry once published on the site. However, if the image is larger, you can follow the steps below to crop and resize it to the desired resolution.
In this example, we will be starting with an image that has a resolution of 1280 x 853 pixels.
- Navigate your browser to pixlr.com,
- Scroll down on the home page and click on Launch Web App.
- Click on Open Image From Computer and navigate to the image file on your hard drive. In the bottom left-hand corner of the image, you’ll see the percentage at which the image is displayed to you, as well as the image’s resolution in pixels. Note that you can click on the percentage and enter any number you like; if you increase the percentage, the image will magnify. If you decrease the percentage, it will zoom out. Doing this does not change anything about the file size or resolution. It simply changes the way in which the file displays on your screen (zoomed in or zoomed out).
- Select the Crop tool from the top left-hand side of the tool menu. (If you hover your mouse over each tool in the menu, a hint text will appear to let you know the name of the tool.) Then, click on the Constraint drop-down menu along the header bar. It will automatically be set to No restriction, but you want to change the selection to Output size.
- Type in the desired resolution and dimensions of your image (in pixels) into the Width and Height boxes to the right of the Constraint field. In this example, we want a landscape orientation image that is 460 pixels wide by 337 pixels high.
- Now you can click and hold down the mouse button from any corner of the image while dragging the crop box across the image. The proportions of the selection will automatically constrain to your desired dimensions, and the resolution of the image will be modified to the pixels you entered. After you release the mouse, you can continue moving the selected area around the image, until the part of the image you want to include is centred as you wish. When you’ve selected the desired area, hit Enter and the image will crop and resize.
- Go to File > Save and enter an appropriate file name. You can leave the Format selection as JPEG (this is the default setting). Drag the Quality selection to 100.
- Click OK and you’ll be prompted to select a location on your computer where the file will be saved.
- Choose a folder and click Save. You can then upload this cropped and resized file onto a web page through the content editing panel in Drupal.
